Description Houghton Golf club is situated in Johannesburg and boasts one of the best courses in the Johannesburg area. The course is home to several tournaments, including the Alfred Dunhill Championship - a championship between Southern Africa and Australasia that is the Southern Hemisphere’s answer to the Ryder cup. Houghton has also hosted the South Africa Open eight times.
This course has gone through some very innovative changes over the past ten years and has been substantially improved and modernized. Holes have been redesigned to incorporate extended water hazards while bunkers have been improved and added to both fairways and greens.
Playing the Course
Taking the high altitude of 6434m into account, the Houghton golf course is not one of the longest in the Johannesburg area but it still remains fairly challenging. The course is thickly treed with blue gums and jacarandas.
Holes are long and demand accuracy as the rough and semi-rough are dangerously thick on fairways that constantly rise and fall. Your ball almost sticks in the long kikuyu grass and you’ll need strong wrists to get it out. Greens are slick and fast with well-positioned bunkers that will challenge any short iron shot. The course has many dams and water hazards and water therefore comes into play on nine of the 18 holes.
The signature hole is the par-three 6th. Accuracy off the tee is important, as you’ll have to negotiate a raised narrow green, protected by two large bunkers on both sides and bushes behind.
