Description Imagine playing golf on a peninsula that juts out into the Indian Ocean and boasts sea views from every angle. Mossel Bay Country Club, half an hour outside the town of George, is just that and makes a great alternative to Fancourt.
If you are staying at Fancourt for more than a week and fancy something different then we suggest the Mossel Bay golf course. The Outeniqua Mountains form a backdrop to this course. Weather-beaten cliffs that have the sea pounding at their bases and the many different kinds of flora make this a course well worth playing on.
Playing the Course
The Mossel Bay Golf Course is a semi-links course that incorporates an estate and nature reserve. At 5880m this is not a particularly long course, has no water hazards and can best be described as user-friendly. But don’t be fooled - there are 94 pot bunkers! The undulating greens are fast and when the wind picks up, expect a challenge.
The par-five 17th signature hole is particularly problematic when the winds begin to howl. Playing towards the Indian Ocean this long 493m hole doglegs right before approaching a raised green surrounded by bunkers. The long 400m par-four 3rd is another hole where club selection is not easy. Long hitters will consider going for the green in two where bunkers again guard the sloping green.
