Description The Fish River Sun Country Club is a Gary Player-designed resort course just outside Port Alfred on the rugged Eastern Cape coastline. Being so close to the coast, one would expect the Fish River Sun to be a Links course but in fact it has a distinctive Parklands layout. When the coastal wind blows the whole character of the course changes and it becomes a tough challenge.
The golf course at 6300m is reasonably long and extremely testing. The fairways are sown with kikuyu grass and bordered by the natural thick coastal vegetation and high rolling dunes, that are common to the area. On development, great care was taken not to disturb the vegetation, especially the Euphorbia trees found on several of the holes.
Playing the Course
Watch out for the Old Women’s River that meanders through the course and comes into play on the 12th, 13th and 16th. The 12th par-five stroke 1 which is played along the river is also the signature hole. This dogleg left which hugs the river plays toward an uphill green guarded by thick rough on either side. On both the 13th and 16th you will need to clear the river, and then take the raft, to get to the adjoining holes. It’ll take some levelheaded golf shots to clear these water hazards!
The only other water hazards are on the 5th and the par-three 8th. The bent greens are rated by many golfers as the best in the country while the fairways are at times narrow with thick bush, shrubs and trees on either side. This course has many doglegs and well-positioned bunkers that guard both fairway and greens.
