One of the most scenic courses in South Africa |
Description The Champagne Sports Resort is situated in central Drakensberg’s Champagne Valley and is the ultimate getaway two hours outside of Durban. With a luxury hotel and extensive sports and recreational facilities including an 18-hole championship golf course, the resort offers a holiday most can only imagine.
The backdrop of the Champagne and Cathkin Peaks makes it one of the most scenic courses in the country. Designed by South African golfer Hugh Baiocchi it is a fair challenge for the low handicapper as well as being playable by the weekend golfer.
Playing the Course
The course is there to be enjoyed - it’s fairly open but with many hazards. The perfectly manicured kikuyu fairways are generously wide and boarded by light rough and many varieties of trees. This is not to say that the course is easy though - the 84 bunkers that line the fairways and guard the bent grass greens will punish misdirected shots. Water hazards are prominent and the course becomes especially tricky in the wetlands.
Teeing off on the signature first hole is both thrilling and daunting. This par-five monster hole measures 605 metres, making it not only the longest hole on the course, but also in South Africa. The elevated tee stands taller than the clubhouse and your drive will have to carry over the Strekspruit Ravine and rough to the fairway far below. The green is around the corner of a dogleg left where two bunkers come into play.
